We offer a selection of 1 day and 2 day navigation training courses and a choice of Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. Most navigation courses take place in the Peak District but can also be based in other areas such as Lake District, Snowdonia, Yorkshire Dales on request.
The Beginner Navigation Training course will provide you with a basic introduction and the skills to start walking safely using a map and compass on paths and in easier to navigate areas.
The 2 Day Navigation Training course (Beginner to Intermediate) is an ideal continuation for those who have undertaken a beginners course but is also suitable for those who have not completed any prior training as we will tailor the exercises to each individuals ability.
The Advanced Navigation Training courses enable you to progress further and learn more in-depth navigation and compass techniques. These will provide you with the skills to tackle more complex terrain and the difficulties of navigating in poor weather or in the dark. Whatever your needs, one of our navigation skills courses will be just the thing.
If you'd prefer a more personalized touch or a 1-to-1 navigation training course then we can create your very own course booked as Private Guiding. Bespoke navigation training courses to help you prepare for the navigation element of the Mountain Leader or Hill & Moorland qualifications can also be arranged, as well as a night navigation training.

1 Day Beginners Navigation Training Course - Edale, Derbyshire.

Learn the basics of navigation with a map and compass, enabling you to have the confidence to explore the great outdoors. This course is aimed at walkers and runners and is ideal for beginners or those wanting to refresh their basic navigation skills. You'll spend the majority of the day in the outdoors, learning to navigate with a map and compass around Edale, Derbyshire in the beautiful Peak District. I tailor the exercises for each person based on your level of skill and those areas you'd like to work on most.

2 Day Learn to Navigate Training Course - Edale, Derbyshire. £179 per person, max 6 clients
You will spend 2 days in the outdoors learning both basic and more advanced navigation techniques such as grid references, relocation, compass bearings, aiming off, attack points, contour recognition and navigation on more technical, rougher and complex ground.
This is an ideal continuation for those who have undertaken a beginners course but also suitable for those who have not completed any other training as we will tailor exercises to each individuals ability.
One of the keys aspects in becoming a good navigator is to practise a wide range of navigation techniques and this really requires 2 full days of training, providing the time to practise the skills and learn from your course leader. The course cost does not include accommodation.

2 Day Advanced Navigation Training - Peak District. £199 per person, max 4 clients
For this advanced navigation training course we head to the Peak District for 2 full days of training in areas of more complex terrain. This is an ideal continuation for those who have already completed an intermediate course or are already able to navigate on and off paths. You'll spend the time outdoors learning more advanced navigation techniques and refining those you already have. Much of the time will be spent on complex terrain, navigating to smaller features and with longer and more complex legs. We will also focus much more on navigation using contours. I tailor the exercises for each person based on your level of skill and those areas you'd like to work on perfecting. The course cost does not include accommodation.

2 Day Advanced Navigation Training - Lake District from £299 per person. Bespoke course.
For this advanced navigation training course we head to the Lake District for 2 full days of training in more complex terrain. This is an ideal continuation for those who have already completed an intermediate course or are already able to navigate on and off paths. You'll spend the time outdoors learning more advanced navigation techniques and refining those you already have. Much of the time will be spent on complex terrain, navigating to smaller features and with longer and more complex legs. We will also focus much more on navigation using contours. I tailor the exercises for each person based on your level of skill and those areas you'd like to work on perfecting. The course cost does not include accommodation.
These are organised as bespoke private courses for 1 to 4 people available on request.
